Course content

The course springs from EDU4150 and focuses on providing practical knowledge and skills of

  • principal designs in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research
  • data collection methods/tools in qualitative, quantitative and mixed research
  • social statistics
  • research proposal development

Learning outcome

The three methodology courses in the programme (EDU4150, EDU4251 Part I and EDU4252 Part II) are designed to reflect and follow the processes involved in planning, conducting, and reporting empirical scientific research. By the end of the courses, you will be equipped with an holistic understanding of social research at methodological, theoretical, and practical levels as applied to education.

This course aims at providing you with knowledge of major types of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, as a preparation for application in your own research work.

Admission

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

The course is a compulsory part of the Master’s Programme in Comparative and International Education. Students are required to have passed EDU4150 - Social Science Research in order to be admitted to this course.

Teaching

The course combines lectures and seminars linked to group exercises.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

The exam consists of a written paper. Requirements and deadlines will be annonunced at the beginning of the course. If you fail the exam, you will have the possibility to rewrite your paper once. The assignment will count as the entire portion of the final course grade.

A minimum of 80 per cent attendance is required of this course. If you do not fulfill the mandatory attendance requirements, you must submit a written request to apply for an additional assignment prior to passing the course. The application must document stated reasons for absence beyond your Control.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
